A show was organized to celebrate International Dance Day by the members of the Manipuri Dance Academy. There were dances and songs in the hour-long program. Dances were in the well-known and widely accepted local Rabindrik dance form performed to Rabindra Sangeet or songs written by Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel Laureate and founder of the university town of Santiniketan considered to be the cultural centre of Bengal. These songs and dances have now become the signature of the Bengali people, in India, Bangladesh and abroad.
Dance Day, every year is on 29 April. It was established in 1982 and is monitored by CID, the International Dance Council. It aims at attracting attention to the art of dance. It promotes the work of dancers and helps them to upgrade their work. The day is celebrated by millions of dancers around the globe. On this day dance professionals organize an event addressing an audience different from their usual one.
